How to Use the Pace Calculator

The relationship between pace, time, and distance means that any one of the three can be calculated when the other two are known. Choose the mode that matches the information you already have.

Find Pace

Use Find Pace when you know how far you ran and how long it took. Enter the distance, choose miles or kilometres, and enter the total time. The result shows your average minutes per kilometre, minutes per mile, km/h, mph, and equivalent finish times at that exact pace.

For example, running 5 kilometres in 25 minutes produces an average pace of 5:00 per kilometre. That converts to approximately 8:03 per mile and an average speed of 12 km/h.

Find Finish Time

Choose Find Finish Time when you know the distance and the pace you intend to maintain. This is useful when planning a race goal or estimating how long a training run will take.

For example, running a 10K at exactly 5:00 per kilometre produces a 50-minute finish time.

Find Distance

Use Find Distance when you know how long you will run and the pace you plan to maintain. A 45-minute run at 6:00 per kilometre covers 7.5 kilometres.

Race Splits

Race Splits converts a target finish time into an average pace and cumulative checkpoint times. Choose a standard distance or enter a custom distance, enter the finish time, and select kilometre, mile, or 5K splits.

Pace / Speed Converter

What Is Running Pace?

Running pace describes the amount of time required to cover a fixed distance. Instead of saying that you ran at 12 kilometres per hour, you might say that you ran at a pace of 5 minutes per kilometre.

In countries where running distances are commonly measured in miles, pace is often written as minutes per mile. A runner might describe a workout as 8:00 per mile, meaning each mile takes approximately eight minutes at that average pace.

Pace and speed describe the same movement in different ways. A faster pace has a smaller time value because less time is required to cover each kilometre or mile.

How to Calculate Running Pace

The basic running pace formula is:

Pace = Total Time ÷ Distance

If you run 10 kilometres in 50 minutes:

50 minutes ÷ 10 kilometres = 5 minutes per kilometre.

Your average pace is therefore 5:00/km.

The same calculation works in miles. If you run 5 miles in 40 minutes:

40 ÷ 5 = 8 minutes per mile.

Your pace is 8:00/mi.

How to Calculate Finish Time From Pace

If pace and distance are known, multiply them together.

Finish Time = Pace × Distance

At 6 minutes per kilometre, a 10-kilometre run takes:

6 minutes × 10 = 60 minutes.

At 8 minutes per mile, a 10-mile run takes 80 minutes, or 1 hour 20 minutes.

How to Calculate Distance From Pace and Time

When time and pace are known, divide the total time by the pace.

Distance = Total Time ÷ Pace

If you run for 60 minutes at 6:00 per kilometre:

60 ÷ 6 = 10 kilometres.

Pace Per Mile

Pace per mile tells you how many minutes and seconds it takes to travel one mile. A 9:00 mile pace means each mile takes an average of nine minutes.

If you maintain a 9:00-per-mile pace for five miles, your finish time is 45 minutes. Maintaining the same average for 10 miles produces 1 hour 30 minutes.

The calculator always displays pace per mile even when you enter the original distance in kilometres.

Pace Per Kilometre

Pace per kilometre represents the time required to cover one kilometre. A 6:00/km pace means each kilometre takes six minutes on average.

At 6:00/km, 5 kilometres takes 30 minutes, 10 kilometres takes 60 minutes, and a half marathon would take approximately 2 hours 6 minutes 35 seconds if that exact average pace were maintained for the entire distance.

How to Convert Pace Per Kilometre to Pace Per Mile

One mile equals exactly 1.609344 kilometres. Because a mile is longer than a kilometre, the time per mile is longer than the time per kilometre at the same speed.

To convert a pace from seconds per kilometre to seconds per mile, multiply by 1.609344.

A 5:00/km pace is 300 seconds per kilometre:

300 × 1.609344 = 482.8032 seconds.

That is approximately 8 minutes 3 seconds per mile.

How to Convert Pace Per Mile to Pace Per Kilometre

Divide seconds per mile by 1.609344.

An 8:00 mile contains 480 seconds:

480 ÷ 1.609344 ≈ 298.26 seconds.

That is approximately 4:58 per kilometre.

Running Pace vs. Speed

Pace measures time per distance, while speed measures distance per time. They are inverse ways of describing how quickly you are moving.

A faster runner has a lower pace number but a higher speed number. For example, 6:00/km equals 10 km/h. A faster 5:00/km pace equals 12 km/h.

Race Split Calculator

A split is the elapsed time at a particular point during a run or race. Splits help runners compare their actual progress with a target average pace.

For example, a runner targeting a 50-minute 10K at an even 5:00/km pace would reach the checkpoints at approximately:

Even Splits

An even split strategy means maintaining approximately the same average pace through the full event. If your target is 5:00/km, an idealized even-split calculation places every kilometre at approximately five minutes.

Real-world pace will often fluctuate. Hills, sharp turns, aid stations, wind, surface changes, crowds, and GPS error can make individual splits faster or slower even when the overall average remains close to the goal.

Negative Splits

A negative split generally means completing the second part of a run or race faster than the first. The average pace needed for the complete race does not change, but the runner distributes the effort differently across the distance.

This calculator intentionally shows neutral even splits rather than claiming one pacing strategy is best for every athlete or course.

Positive Splits

A positive split occurs when the second portion takes longer than the first. This can happen intentionally or because of fatigue, hills, weather, fueling issues, or starting faster than can be sustained.

Treadmill Pace Calculator

Many treadmills display speed rather than minutes per kilometre or mile. Use Pace / Speed mode to convert your outdoor target pace into the corresponding treadmill speed.

Treadmill belt speed does not guarantee that indoor effort will feel identical to outdoor running. Cooling, incline, treadmill calibration, running mechanics, and environmental conditions can all affect perceived effort.

For example, walking 5 kilometres in one hour gives an average pace of 12:00/km and an average speed of 5 km/h.

Running Pace and Distance

Pace can also help estimate how far a time-based workout will take you. A runner maintaining 5:00/km for 30 minutes covers approximately 6 kilometres. At 6:00/km, the same 30-minute run covers approximately 5 kilometres.

Average Pace vs. Instant Pace

This calculator determines average pace across the entire entered distance. GPS watches and running apps may also display instant pace, lap pace, moving pace, grade-adjusted pace, or other metrics.

Instant pace describes an estimate of your speed at a particular moment and can fluctuate substantially. Average pace uses the complete distance and time, making it more stable for comparing an overall run or race.

Moving Time vs. Elapsed Time

Your calculated pace changes depending on which time you use. Elapsed time includes the complete period from start to finish, including stops. Moving time generally excludes periods when the tracking device considers you stopped.

For a race, official finish time is typically based on elapsed race timing rather than automatically removing every moment you slowed or stopped.

Why GPS Pace May Differ From a Calculator

A GPS device estimates distance from recorded positions. Trees, tall buildings, tunnels, curves, weak satellite reception, recording intervals, and smoothing algorithms can affect the measured route.

If a race is officially measured as 10 kilometres but your watch records 10.12 kilometres, pace calculated from the watch distance can differ from pace calculated using the official course distance.

Race Pace Is an Average

A target pace such as 5:00/km does not mean every kilometre must be exactly 5:00. A 4:55 kilometre followed by a 5:05 kilometre averages 5:00 across those two kilometres.

This matters on courses with elevation changes. Uphill sections may naturally be slower while downhill or flat sections may be faster.

Equivalent Race Times Are Not Predictions

The calculator displays what common race distances would take if you maintained exactly the same mathematical pace. These are useful comparisons, but they do not predict what you are physically capable of running.

For example, a runner who can run 5K at 5:00/km can mathematically cover a marathon in approximately 3:30:59 at the same pace. That does not mean the runner currently has the endurance or training required to hold 5:00/km for a marathon.

Factors That Affect Running Pace

  • Distance: A pace that is sustainable for 5K may not be sustainable for a marathon.
  • Elevation: Hills can substantially change kilometre or mile splits.
  • Weather: Heat, cold, wind, humidity, rain, and snow may affect performance.
  • Surface: Track, road, grass, gravel, mud, sand, and trails can produce different speeds.
  • Fitness: Training history and current conditioning influence sustainable pace.
  • Fatigue: Pace may slow as a long race or training session progresses.
  • Fuel and hydration: Longer efforts may be affected by nutrition and fluid intake.
  • Congestion: Crowded starting areas and narrow courses can affect early splits.
