Simple vs Advanced Road Trip Calculator

Advanced Estimate adds fuel economy, fuel price, starting tank level, meal stops, maximum daily driving time, overnight stops and an optional departure date and time.

Road Trip Driving Time Formula
The basic driving-time calculation is:
Driving Time = Trip Distance ÷ Average Speed
For example, a 1,000-kilometre trip at an average speed of 100 km/h would require approximately:
1,000 ÷ 100 = 10 hours of driving
Real road trips usually take longer because fuel stops, food, washroom breaks, traffic and other delays need to be added to the pure driving time.
How the Fuel Stop Calculator Works
The calculator starts with the full-tank range you enter and reduces it by the fuel reserve you want to keep.
For example, suppose your vehicle can travel 600 kilometres on a full tank but you want to refuel with approximately 15% remaining.
Your planned usable range would be:
600 × 85% = 510 kilometres
A 1,200-kilometre trip would therefore require a fuel stop before every approximately 510 kilometres of travel.
Why Keep a Fuel Reserve?
Planning to use every last kilometre of a vehicle’s theoretical range is rarely practical.
Fuel economy can change because of wind, hills, traffic, speed, towing, temperature and vehicle load. A service station may also be farther away than expected.
Keeping a 10% to 20% planning reserve provides more flexibility than assuming you will arrive at every fuel stop almost empty.
How Often Should You Stop on a Road Trip?
There is no single break schedule that works for every driver. Some people prefer a quick stop every two hours while others are comfortable driving longer.
The calculator defaults to a break every two hours, but you can choose intervals from 1.5 to 4 hours.
The calculator is only a planning tool. If you become tired, uncomfortable or unable to concentrate, take a break regardless of the calculated schedule.
Fuel Stops and Rest Stops Can Be Combined
One important feature of this calculator is that it does not simply add every fuel stop and every rest stop together.
In real life, drivers commonly refuel, use the washroom, buy a drink and stretch their legs during the same stop.
For that reason, the calculator displays fuel stops and rest breaks separately but also provides an approximate number of combined stops.
Road Trip Stop Example
Imagine a 1,000-kilometre road trip with an average driving speed of 95 km/h.
Pure driving time is approximately:
1,000 ÷ 95 = 10.5 hours
If you stop roughly every two hours, the trip may require around five rest opportunities before arriving.
If the vehicle’s usable fuel range is greater than the distance travelled between those breaks, some of those rest stops can double as fuel stops.
Calculate Road Trip Fuel Cost
Advanced mode also estimates the amount of fuel required for the trip.
If you use litres per 100 kilometres, the formula is:
Fuel Used = Distance ÷ 100 × L/100 km
For example, a vehicle using 9 L/100 km over 1,000 kilometres would consume approximately:
1,000 ÷ 100 × 9 = 90 litres
If fuel costs $1.50 per litre:
90 × $1.50 = $135
Road Trip Fuel Cost Using MPG
Drivers using miles and gallons can switch the Advanced calculator to MPG.
The formula becomes:
Gallons Used = Miles Driven ÷ MPG
A 1,000-mile road trip in a vehicle averaging 25 MPG would use approximately:
1,000 ÷ 25 = 40 gallons
Meal Stops on Long Road Trips
Short rest breaks may only take 10 or 15 minutes, while stopping for a proper meal can easily take 30 minutes or longer.
Advanced mode lets you choose how frequently you expect to stop for food and how long each meal stop may take.
Meal stops are allowed to overlap with ordinary rest stops so the calculator does not automatically count eating and resting as two completely separate stops.
Planning Overnight Stops
Very long road trips may be safer and more practical when divided across multiple days.
Advanced mode lets you select a maximum number of driving hours per day. Once the trip exceeds that amount, the calculator estimates how many overnight stops may be needed.
For example, a journey requiring approximately 20 hours of pure driving would likely span three driving days if you limit yourself to eight hours behind the wheel each day.
Road Trip Arrival Time Calculator
If you enter a departure date and time in Advanced mode, the calculator adds estimated driving time, rest stops, meal stops, overnight breaks and any extra delay allowance.
The result gives you an approximate arrival date and time instead of only telling you how many hours the trip takes.
This can be useful when planning hotel check-in times, meeting someone at your destination or deciding what time to leave home.
Add Extra Time for Traffic and Construction
Driving distance does not tell you everything about a trip. Major cities, construction zones, border crossings, mountain roads and holiday traffic can all create delays.
Advanced mode includes an Extra Delay Allowance field where you can add additional minutes to the trip estimate.

Select Round Trip if you want the calculator to double the distance you entered and estimate the entire return journey.
This is useful when planning fuel cost for a weekend getaway, day trip or other journey where you expect to drive the same general distance home.
If the return route is significantly different from the outbound route, calculate the two legs separately for a more accurate estimate.
How Average Speed Affects Road Trip Time
The posted speed limit is not necessarily your average speed for the entire trip.
You may drive 110 km/h on a freeway but slow considerably when passing through towns, construction zones and congested areas.
Using a slightly conservative average speed usually produces a more realistic trip-time estimate than entering the highest highway speed you expect to reach.
Vehicle Range Can Change During a Road Trip
A vehicle that normally travels 650 kilometres on a tank may not achieve the same range under every condition.

Road Trips With a Trailer or RV
Towing can change both fuel economy and average driving speed, so use numbers that reflect the vehicle when loaded rather than its normal unloaded performance.
A truck that normally achieves a 700-kilometre highway range may have a dramatically shorter range when towing a large travel trailer.
Larger combinations may also take longer to enter fuel stations, park for meals and navigate urban areas, so increasing the average stop duration can improve the estimate.

Pure driving time would be approximately:
500 ÷ 65 = 7.7 hours
If you stop roughly every two hours, you may take several short breaks during the trip.
If your vehicle has a usable highway range of 400 miles, you would also expect approximately one fuel stop before reaching the destination.
Example: 1,500-Kilometre Road Trip
Suppose your route is 1,500 kilometres and your realistic average speed is 95 km/h.
Driving time is approximately:
1,500 ÷ 95 = 15.8 hours
With an eight-hour maximum driving day selected in Advanced mode, the calculator would plan an overnight stop rather than treating the journey as one continuous drive.
