How to Use the Hunting Meat Yield Calculator

Start by selecting pounds or kilograms and choosing the type of game animal. Then enter the animal’s field-dressed weight.

Simple mode applies an estimated boneless meat yield percentage to that weight. You can change the percentage if you have better information from your own past animals or processor.

Simple vs Advanced Meat Yield Calculator

Simple Estimate is best when you already know the field-dressed weight and only want a quick estimate of how much boneless meat could end up in the freezer.

Advanced Estimate breaks the process into multiple stages. You can start with estimated live weight, calculate field-dressed weight, then subtract bone, trimming and processing losses.

Hunting Meat Yield Formula

The simplest calculation is:

Estimated Meat Yield = Field-Dressed Weight × Meat Yield Percentage

For example, if a deer has a field-dressed weight of 150 pounds and you estimate that 45% becomes packaged boneless meat:

150 × 45% = 67.5 pounds of meat

What Is Field-Dressed Weight?

Field-dressed weight is the weight of the animal after its internal organs have been removed.

It is generally a more useful starting point for estimating meat yield than live weight because a large portion of live body weight is removed during field dressing.

Live Weight vs Field-Dressed Weight

Live weight includes everything: organs, digestive contents, blood and all other body components.

Field-dressed weight is lower because much of that material has already been removed.

Advanced mode lets you enter a field-dressing percentage to estimate dressed weight when you only have an estimated live weight.

Why Meat Yield Is Lower Than Field-Dressed Weight

A 150-pound field-dressed deer does not produce 150 pounds of packaged steaks, roasts and burger.

The carcass still includes bones, hide or hide-related weight depending on how it was weighed, connective tissue, fat, damaged tissue and portions that may be discarded during trimming.

That is why packaged-meat yield can be dramatically lower than field-dressed weight.

Deer Meat Yield Calculator

For deer, enter the actual field-dressed weight whenever possible.

A larger mature buck may produce considerably more meat than a smaller deer, but body condition and shot damage can also make a noticeable difference.

If a deer dresses at 160 pounds and your estimated packaged-meat yield is 45%, the calculator gives approximately:

160 × 0.45 = 72 pounds

Whitetail Deer Meat Yield

Whitetail deer can vary enormously in body size depending on age, sex, genetics, nutrition and region.

Instead of assuming every whitetail produces the same amount of meat, enter the actual dressed weight of your animal and adjust the yield percentage to match your processing style.

Mule Deer Meat Yield

Mature mule deer can produce substantial amounts of meat, but the same basic calculation applies.

Use the measured field-dressed weight when available rather than relying only on species averages.

Elk Meat Yield Calculator

An elk can produce several times the amount of meat of a deer, which makes freezer space and processing plans especially important.

Enter the actual or estimated field-dressed weight and use the yield percentage to calculate approximately how much boneless meat could be packaged.

Advanced mode can also help estimate the amount of weight removed as bone and trim.

Moose Meat Yield Calculator

Moose are extremely large game animals, and even modest differences in yield percentage can represent many pounds or kilograms of meat.

For that reason, using an actual measured dressed weight provides a much better estimate than simply selecting the species.

Caribou Meat Yield

Caribou body size and condition vary by animal and season. Use the calculator the same way you would for deer or elk: start with field-dressed weight and apply your best estimate of usable-meat recovery.

Pronghorn Meat Yield

Pronghorn are smaller-bodied than many deer and elk, so total packaged meat will normally be lower even when the percentage yield is similar.

Because the calculator works from the animal’s weight rather than a fixed pounds-per-species assumption, it can be used for animals of very different sizes.

Wild Boar Meat Yield

Wild boar can also be entered into the calculator. Fat levels, animal size, processor trimming and which cuts are retained can all change the final yield.

Shot Placement and Meat Loss

Shot placement can have a major impact on packaged meat yield.

Damage through heavily muscled areas may require additional trimming around bloodshot or contaminated tissue.

Advanced mode includes a Trim / Damage Loss percentage so you can account for more or less trimming than usual.

Bone-In vs Boneless Meat

A hunter keeping bone-in steaks, ribs or roasts may take home a heavier package total than someone who completely debones the animal.

This calculator is primarily designed around boneless take-home meat.

If you keep significant bone-in cuts, reduce the Bone / Skeleton Loss percentage in Advanced mode to better match your processing method.

Processor Trim Loss

Different processors may trim animals differently.

One processor may remove nearly all visible fat and connective tissue while another may leave more material in burger or sausage trim.

This can make two animals with identical dressed weights produce different packaged-meat totals.

How Much Freezer Space Will I Need?

Once you know approximately how much meat you expect to bring home, you can use the packaged-meat estimate to plan freezer capacity.

Advanced mode also estimates the number of packages based on the package weight you enter.

For example, an estimated 80 pounds of meat packed into one-pound portions represents roughly 80 packages.

Example Deer Yield Calculation

Suppose a whitetail deer weighs 150 pounds after field dressing.

Using an estimated 45% boneless yield:

150 × 0.45 = 67.5 pounds

The calculator would therefore estimate approximately 67.5 pounds of packaged meat.

Example Elk Yield Calculation

Suppose an elk has a field-dressed weight of 500 pounds and the selected yield is 42%.

500 × 0.42 = 210 pounds

The estimated packaged-meat yield would be about 210 pounds before adjusting the percentage for the individual animal and processing method.

Use Your Previous Animals for Better Estimates

If you regularly hunt the same species and use the same processor, your own records can produce a much better yield percentage than a generic estimate.

Record the field-dressed weight and final packaged meat from each animal.

Then calculate:

Actual Yield Percentage = Packaged Meat ÷ Field-Dressed Weight × 100

Meat Yield and Trophy Scoring

Antler size and meat yield measure completely different things. A trophy animal can have impressive antlers without necessarily producing the largest amount of packaged meat.

Final Thoughts

The weight of a game animal can be misleading if you’re trying to figure out how much meat will actually end up in your freezer.

Organs, bones, damaged tissue, fat and processor trimming can remove a substantial portion of the animal’s total weight before the meat is packaged.

Use Simple mode when you already know the field-dressed weight and only want a quick estimate.

For a more detailed calculation, switch to Advanced mode and account for field dressing, bones, trim and processing separately.
