How to Use the Gematria Calculator

The calculator is divided into English Gematria, Hebrew Gematria and Compare Phrases modes. Choose the mode that matches the text you want to calculate, type or paste your word or phrase, and select Calculate Gematria. The result appears immediately along with several related cipher values and a letter-by-letter breakdown.

In English mode, the calculator displays English Ordinal, Full Reduction, Reverse Ordinal and Reverse Reduction values. These are modern letter-number ciphers based on the 26-letter English alphabet. The letter breakdown uses English Ordinal by default because it is the simplest system to follow: A equals 1, B equals 2 and the pattern continues through Z equals 26.

Hebrew mode calculates Standard Hebrew gematria, Mispar Gadol, Hebrew Ordinal and Hebrew Reduction. Standard gematria assigns values from 1 through 400 to the 22 Hebrew letters. Mispar Gadol changes the treatment of the five final letter forms so they can continue the number sequence through 900.

What Is Gematria?

Gematria is a system in which letters are assigned numerical values and the values of the letters in a word or phrase are added together. It is especially associated with Hebrew and with Jewish interpretive and mystical traditions. In its simplest numerical form, a Hebrew word can therefore be represented both by its letters and by the sum of their assigned numbers.

For example, the Hebrew letter aleph has a value of 1, bet has a value of 2, gimel has a value of 3 and so on. Once the alphabet reaches yod, the values move into tens. Yod is 10, kaf is 20, lamed is 30 and the pattern continues. Later letters use hundreds, with qof at 100, resh at 200, shin at 300 and tav at 400.

Gematria is therefore more than ordinary arithmetic in its historical context. The arithmetic determines the numerical value. Interpretive traditions may then compare words with equal or related values and examine whether that numerical relationship has symbolic significance.

The calculator on this page performs the arithmetic portion. It does not declare that two words with the same number necessarily have an objective or hidden relationship. Interpretation depends on the particular tradition, text and method being used.

How Does Gematria Work?

The basic calculation has three steps. First, choose a cipher or letter-value system. Second, replace every applicable letter with its numerical value. Third, add those values together.

For a very simple English example using English Ordinal, consider the word CAT:

  • C = 3
  • A = 1
  • T = 20

Add the values:

3 + 1 + 20 = 24

The English Ordinal value of CAT is therefore 24.

The addition itself is simple. The important part is identifying the cipher because the same word can produce another total under a different system. Full Reduction, for example, reduces the letter values to a repeating 1-through-9 pattern. Reverse Ordinal starts from the opposite end of the alphabet.

Hebrew Gematria Calculator

Hebrew gematria is the historical core of gematria. Hebrew letters function as letters but have also been used to represent numbers. The standard system assigns units to the first nine letters, tens to the next nine and hundreds to the remaining four letters.

This produces a distinctive progression. Aleph through tet represent 1 through 9. Yod through tsadi represent 10 through 90. Qof, resh, shin and tav represent 100, 200, 300 and 400.

Five Hebrew letters have special final forms when they appear at the end of a word: kaf, mem, nun, pe and tsadi. Under ordinary standard gematria, those final forms retain the same values as the corresponding normal letters. Under Mispar Gadol, however, the final forms can be assigned 500, 600, 700, 800 and 900.

Because those two methods treat final letters differently, a Hebrew word ending in a final letter can have a much larger Mispar Gadol value than its standard gematria value.

Standard Gematria – Mispar Hechrechi

The standard Hebrew value system is commonly called Mispar Hechrechi or the absolute value. It uses the familiar sequence of 1 through 9, 10 through 90 and 100 through 400.

Under this method, the five final forms retain the same numerical values as their ordinary counterparts. Final kaf remains 20, final mem remains 40, final nun remains 50, final pe remains 80 and final tsadi remains 90.

This is the calculator's main Hebrew result because it is the simplest standard representation of Hebrew numerical values.

Mispar Gadol Gematria

Mispar Gadol, often translated as the large or great value, can extend the numerical sequence by giving distinct values to the five final Hebrew letters. Instead of using the ordinary value of the corresponding letter, the final forms continue the hundreds sequence.

This difference can dramatically change a total when a word contains one of the final forms. That is why a gematria result should identify the cipher rather than presenting an unexplained number.

Hebrew Ordinal Gematria

Hebrew Ordinal assigns each of the 22 letters its position in the Hebrew alphabet rather than using the standard units, tens and hundreds pattern. Aleph is 1, bet is 2, gimel is 3 and the sequence continues until tav, the twenty-second letter, receives a value of 22.

Under the ordinal system used by this calculator, final letter forms use the ordinal position of the corresponding ordinary letter. Final mem therefore has the same ordinal position as mem rather than being treated as an additional twenty-third letter.

This produces much smaller totals than standard gematria for words containing later letters because shin, for example, becomes 21 instead of 300 and tav becomes 22 instead of 400.

Reduced Hebrew Gematria

Reduced gematria brings standard Hebrew letter values into the 1-through-9 range. Values that contain tens or hundreds are reduced by their digit structure. Yod, with a standard value of 10, reduces to 1. Kaf at 20 reduces to 2, lamed at 30 becomes 3 and so on.

The same repeating pattern continues through the alphabet. Qof at 100 reduces to 1, resh at 200 reduces to 2, shin at 300 reduces to 3 and tav at 400 reduces to 4.

This is related to a digital-root style reduction, although traditions may describe reduced forms using their own terminology. The calculator labels the method explicitly as Hebrew Reduction so it can be distinguished from standard and ordinal values.

English Gematria Calculator

English gematria calculators apply letter-number ciphers to the 26-letter Latin alphabet. These English systems should be distinguished from historical Hebrew gematria. They use a similar idea—letters are converted into numbers—but the particular assignments are modern cipher conventions rather than the traditional Hebrew sequence.

The calculator includes four straightforward English methods: English Ordinal, Full Reduction, Reverse Ordinal and Reverse Reduction. Showing all four at once makes it easy to see how one phrase changes depending on the cipher.

English Ordinal Gematria

English Ordinal is the simplest English letter-value system. Each letter receives its ordinary position in the alphabet.

A = 1, B = 2, C = 3 ... X = 24, Y = 25, Z = 26

To calculate the value of a word, convert every letter into its alphabet position and add the results.

English Ordinal Example: LOVE

  • L = 12
  • O = 15
  • V = 22
  • E = 5

Add the four values:

12 + 15 + 22 + 5 = 54

Full Reduction Gematria

Full Reduction uses a repeating 1-through-9 pattern across the English alphabet. The first nine letters receive values of 1 through 9, and then the cycle begins again.

For LOVE, the reduced values are L = 3, O = 6, V = 4 and E = 5. The Full Reduction total is therefore 18.

This demonstrates why the cipher name matters. LOVE equals 54 under English Ordinal but 18 under Full Reduction even though the spelling has not changed.

Reverse Ordinal and Reverse Reduction

Reverse Ordinal flips the English alphabet values. Instead of A beginning at 1, A begins at 26. Z becomes 1.

A = 26, B = 25, C = 24 ... X = 3, Y = 2, Z = 1

Reverse Reduction applies the same 1-through-9 reduction concept after reversing the alphabet values. Because the order is reversed, letters that share a value under ordinary reduction will not necessarily share the same value under reverse reduction.

These systems make it possible to compare the same phrase across several common English ciphers without manually rebuilding the alphabet each time.

Compare Gematria Values of Two Words or Phrases

One common reason to calculate gematria is to compare two words or phrases. The comparison mode lets you choose one cipher and apply it consistently to both pieces of text.

If Phrase A has a value of 54 and Phrase B has a value of 54 under the same cipher, the calculator reports that the totals match. If one is 54 and the other is 49, the absolute difference is 5.

The phrase comparison is purely numerical. Two equal sums do not demonstrate by themselves that the words have the same meaning or an objective hidden relationship. They simply establish that the selected cipher gives both texts the same arithmetic total.

Gematria Examples

Worked examples are useful because they make the differences between ciphers easier to see. The same letters can produce several valid arithmetic totals depending on the system selected.

Example 1: CAT in English Ordinal

C is the third letter, A is the first and T is the twentieth:

3 + 1 + 20 = 24

CAT therefore has an English Ordinal value of 24.

Example 2: CAT in Full Reduction

C remains 3, A remains 1 and T reduces from its ordinal position of 20 to 2:

3 + 1 + 2 = 6

The same word therefore has a Full Reduction value of 6.

Example 3: LOVE in English Ordinal

L = 12, O = 15, V = 22 and E = 5:

12 + 15 + 22 + 5 = 54

Example 4: Hebrew חי

The Hebrew word חי contains het and yod. Het has a standard value of 8 and yod has a value of 10:

8 + 10 = 18

The standard gematria value is therefore 18.

Example 5: Hebrew שלום

Using standard Hebrew gematria:

  • ש = 300
  • ל = 30
  • ו = 6
  • ם = 40 in standard gematria

The total is:

300 + 30 + 6 + 40 = 376

Under Mispar Gadol, final mem can instead take the value 600. The same spelling then produces 300 + 30 + 6 + 600 = 936. This is a clear example of why the cipher must be named when giving a gematria value.

Gematria and Digit Roots

The calculator also displays the digit root of the main result. A digit root repeatedly adds the digits of a positive whole number until a single digit remains.

For example, if a gematria value is 376:

3 + 7 + 6 = 16

Then reduce again:

1 + 6 = 7

The digit root of 376 is therefore 7.

The digit root is displayed as an additional mathematical property of the result. It should not be confused with the selected gematria cipher itself. Standard Hebrew gematria may give 376 while a reduction system applies different rules at the individual-letter level.

Gematria of Names

Names can be entered into the calculator in the same way as any other word. In English mode, only the Latin letters are scored. Capitalization makes no difference because A and a are treated as the same letter.

A full name can be entered with spaces between the first, middle and last names. Spaces do not add a numerical value, so the result is equivalent to adding the values of the individual names together.

When a name has more than one accepted spelling or transliteration, the spelling matters. Changing one letter changes the total. An English transliteration of a Hebrew name should therefore not be expected to produce the same number as the original Hebrew spelling unless a particular method specifically defines that relationship.

Gematria of Phrases and Sentences

The calculator can process more than one word at a time. Spaces and punctuation are ignored, while every recognized letter contributes to the total. This means a phrase value is simply the sum of all scored letters throughout the phrase.

For English Ordinal, the phrase can be understood as one long sequence of letter values. If a phrase contains three words, calculate each word separately and add the three word totals, or calculate all letters together. The result is identical because addition is associative.

For long phrases, the letter-by-letter breakdown can become lengthy, but it provides a useful audit trail when you want to verify exactly which letters were included.

Does Capitalization Change Gematria?

No. In the English ciphers used here, uppercase and lowercase versions of the same letter receive the same value. A, a and an accented Latin letter normalized to A are treated as the same basic letter when possible.

Hebrew letters likewise receive their values according to the character itself rather than visual size or formatting. Final forms are handled according to the selected Hebrew cipher.

Do Spaces and Punctuation Count?

Spaces, commas, periods, apostrophes, quotation marks, hyphens and other punctuation marks are ignored by this calculator. They have no letter value in the included ciphers.

Digits typed into the text field are also ignored rather than added directly to the gematria total. If you want to perform ordinary calculations involving numerical digits themselves, use a mathematical calculator instead.

Hebrew Vowels and Cantillation Marks

Written Hebrew may include vowel points and cantillation marks in addition to the alphabetic letters. These marks do not receive values in the standard letter table used by this calculator, so they are removed before the total is calculated.

This means a pointed Hebrew word and the same word without vowel points should produce the same result as long as the underlying consonantal letters are identical.

Why Do Gematria Calculators Give Different Answers?

Two calculators may give different results without either one making an arithmetic mistake. The difference may come from the cipher each calculator uses.

A Hebrew calculator may use standard values while another uses Mispar Gadol, ordinal values or a reduced method. An English calculator may default to A=1 through Z=26 while another may use reduction or reversed values.

Differences can also result from whether final Hebrew letters receive ordinary or extended values, whether accented characters are normalized, how transliterations are handled and whether a calculator counts additional symbols.

The best way to compare results is to identify the cipher first. Once the same letter-value table is used, the arithmetic can be checked letter by letter.

Gematria and Number Patterns

After calculating a gematria value, some users examine the resulting number itself. They may look at factors, repeated digits, divisibility, relationships to other totals or reduced forms.

Those are separate mathematical properties from the gematria calculation that produced the number. For example, if a phrase equals 144, the fact that 144 equals 12 × 12 is an ordinary mathematical property of 144 rather than a new gematria rule.

Gematria vs. Numerology

Gematria and numerology both associate numbers with letters or other information, but they should not automatically be treated as the same system.

Is Gematria Mathematics?

The calculations themselves use ordinary arithmetic. Once a cipher has assigned a fixed number to every letter, calculating a word value is simply addition. The answer can be reproduced by anyone who uses the same spelling and the same letter-value table.

The interpretation of that numerical result is a different matter. Mathematics can confirm that a particular group of letters adds to a particular number under a defined cipher. Mathematics by itself does not establish what symbolic meaning should be attached to the coincidence or relationship.

This distinction is useful when using any gematria calculator. The numerical calculation can be checked objectively against the selected mapping. Interpretations belong to the historical, religious, literary or personal framework in which the calculation is being used.

How to Calculate Gematria by Hand

You do not need a calculator to compute a short gematria value. Start by writing the word. Under every letter, write its value from the cipher table. Add the numbers together and check the total.

For English Ordinal, the alphabet position provides the value automatically. For Hebrew standard gematria, memorizing the basic structure makes calculations much faster: 1 through 9, then 10 through 90 by tens, then 100 through 400 by hundreds.

For longer phrases, working one word at a time can reduce mistakes. Find the value of each word, record those subtotals and then add the subtotals together.

Common Gematria Calculation Mistakes

  • Using the wrong cipher: A total is meaningful only in relation to the letter-value system that produced it.
  • Mixing two ciphers: Do not use standard values for some letters and reduced values for others unless the method specifically requires it.

Can I calculate a person's name?

Yes. Enter the name exactly as you want it scored. Different spellings can produce different totals.

Can I calculate a full sentence?

Yes. The calculator can process phrases and sentences up to 5,000 characters. Only recognized letters contribute to the result.

Can I compare two phrases?

Yes. Choose Compare Phrases, select one cipher and enter both phrases. The calculator shows both totals, their numerical difference and whether they match.

What happens if I transliterate a Hebrew word into English?

The result will depend on the English spelling and English cipher. It should not be assumed to equal the value of the original Hebrew word.

Can I calculate gematria by hand?

Yes. Write the value beside each letter using the chosen cipher and add the numbers together. The calculator automates the same arithmetic.

Final Thoughts

A gematria value is only meaningful when the cipher is clearly identified. The same word can have one total under Standard Hebrew gematria, another under Mispar Gadol and completely different values under modern English ordinal or reduction ciphers.

Use English Gematria mode for English Ordinal, Full Reduction, Reverse Ordinal and Reverse Reduction. Use Hebrew Gematria mode for standard values, Mispar Gadol, Hebrew Ordinal and Hebrew Reduction. If you want to know whether two words or phrases share a numerical value, use Compare Phrases and make sure both texts are calculated with exactly the same cipher.

The calculator handles the letter conversion and arithmetic automatically while showing the individual values behind the total. That makes it useful both for quick calculations and for checking a gematria value one letter at a time.
